Wildcat Weekly - Week of September 14, 2015

Week one is now complete.  Though we are still doing some fine-tuning of student schedules, routines, and other important functions of the school, our hope is that the first week back was an enjoyable one for your son/daughter.

A special thanks to PAC for the delicious breakfast treats provided for our start-of-year Staff Meeting.

Just a reminder to check out the sidebar (on the left of the website) to see some of the other upcoming events.  Please note that our school calendar in this sidebar, can be exported and viewed in your iCal or Google Calendar.

Tuesday September 15, 2015 – Parent Advisory Council (PAC) Meeting 7pm. (Repeat)

Please join us for the first PAC Meeting of the year.  Meet the PAC, find out a little bit more about the school and provide your input and feedback as we continue to make McMath the best place for our students.

Tuesday September 22, 2015 – Photo Day

September 22nd is Photo Day at McMath.  Photos will be taken for GoCards, Yearbook, as well as for packages for purchase.  Students should have brought home a brochure on the first day of school with information about packages available for purchase.

Thursday September 24, 2015 – Meet the Teacher Night (6:30pm to 8:30pm) (Repeat)

A reminder that Thursday September 24th will be Meet the Teacher Night.  Beginning at 6:30pm (opening welcome in the Gym), parents will follow their son/daughter’s schedules for a short visit with each of their students’ classes.  No appointments are necessary.

Pick Ups and Drop Offs

We have recently received a number of complaints from the residents of Minato West regarding McMath parents using the residents' parking lot as a drop off and pick up area.  As this is private property, the residents have asked that we make a strong plea for parents to use alternative locations.  The RCMP have been notified.

To avoid the congestion in our school's parking lot, we encourage parents avoid the peak times.  The school parking lots are extremely busy in the period immediately before the first bell or after the last.  Avoiding these times will elliminate a great deal of this congestion as well as even more frustrations.

McMath Practices Emergency Procedures

Today, Friday Sept 11th during our 3rd block class, our school conducted 3 separate Emergency Drills. The staff & students firstly rehearsed all procedures for Lockdown (A Code Yellow situation escalating to a Code Red Situation), then proceeded to practice both Earthquake & Fire Evacuation steps.

Completing these important safety skills right at the beginning of the year allows students to fully understand why certain steps are followed, and are given the opportunity to physically practice the skills.

Various scenarios were covered during the drills, and procedures were explained for both in class time emergencies, as well as procedures to follow if an event occurs during break times through a school day.

After the administration led drills were completed, classes had the opportunity to complete a Lockdown Feedback form to clarify steps and to ask questions.

These life-saving skills are conducted several times throughout the school year to allow the procedures to become routine for all members of our school community. Thus, if a real emergency were to occur, the staff & students would be well prepared, and would cope well. School Board persons and members of the RCMP were on site to witness & evaluate our practices today.

Well done to all staff & students for your excellent participation in today’s safety drills.

School Calendars Distributed Next Week

Due to a production delay, our school calendars were not available for distribution this past week.  The calendars will arrive early next week.  Our hope is to make them available for families by the end of next week.

Daily Physical Activity

As mentioned in the August Mailout, it is expected that all students complete 30 minutes of Daily Physical Activity (grade 8’s and 9’s) or 150 minutes per week (grades 10-12).  Though a Ministry requirement, this is more importantly a healthy reminder for all of us to find ways to be active and fit.

NOT a School NOR District Sanctioned Trip

In the coming days or weeks, you may here about a trip for next year's grade 11’s or 12 students.  It may be a ski trip in BC or a trip to warmer locations for spring break.  Unfortunately, as we have not been contacted by any of the organizing companies, we have very little information to share.  We are writing at this time to clarify that these are not a school nor District sanctioned events.

The trips are organized by student representatives of companies such as “S-Trip.”  While we are in no position to make a comment about these organizations, I simply wanted to reiterate to any parents of any of the participants that neither the school nor the Richmond School District has been involved with the planning, organization, insurance, or any subsequent liabilities.  No McMath staff members or District Employees will be attending or will be supervising any of the activities on this trip.

Staff welcoming our newest WIldcats... the beginning of great things to come.
