SD38 Diversity and Antiracism Working Group

Dear Parents/Guardians of Richmond School students,

**Chinese translation attached if required**

As part of the Richmond Board of Education’s mandate for the Diversity and Antiracism Working Group, and commitment to the Board’s Strategic Plan (in particular Strategic Priority 2 – Equity and Inclusion), the Richmond School District is currently undergoing a diversity, equity and inclusion audit and has contracted Bakau Consulting Inc. to support our work. The audit process will include surveying students, parents and employees about their experiences in the Richmond School District with diversity, equity and inclusion, including bias, discrimination and racism.

The audit also incorporates focus group sessions for students, parents and employees with the intention of eliciting added depth to the survey feedback. The conversations will gather information about stakeholder experiences in this area, and participants’ “blue sky” thinking to become the most equitable and inclusive school district we can possibly be.

Focus groups are voluntary and will be facilitated by a consultant from Bakau Consulting, with a representative from the Diversity and Antiracism Working Group present. Your contributions will be analyzed by the Bakau Consulting Team to identify common themes and recommendations back to the Diversity and Antiracism Working Group. The Working Group will ultimately make recommendations to the Board of Education for consideration and further action. Your contributions will remain anonymous throughout the process.

Focus groups will be designed for a maximum of 30 participants, for two hours in length. Focus group sessions will be held on Zoom, and participants in this focus group will be all parents/guardians of current students.

  • You are invited to a focus group on Monday, June 7, 5:30-7:30 pm OR Saturday, June 26, 9:00 am-11:00 am

  • If you would like to participate on June 7, please sign up here.

  • If you would like to participate on June 26, please sign up here.

  • If the focus groups reach maximum capacity, then a waitlist will be kept, and future focus groups may be scheduled.

  • If you would like more information before signing up, please contact Christel Brautigam cbrautigam@sd38.bc.ca for more information.

  • Zoom links will be sent to participants closer to the date of the focus group.

Thank you for considering this invitation to participate in a focus group. The recent and tragic discovery of the bodies of 215 children in the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc territory at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School, highlights more than ever the continued need to focus on taking specific action to eliminate racism and systemic discrimination in our school district and our communities.
