Student Notices February 2, 2024

Social Justice 12 students would like to encourage McMath to celebrate Black History Month and will be sharing biographies of important African Canadians all February. Today we’ll be highlighting Viola Desmond. She was an entrepreneur born in Halifax. She decided to sit in the “whites only” section of the theater after being refused to sell her that specific ticket as she was told “we’re not permitted to sell those tickets to you people.” She was then promptly dragged out by the police, injuring her in the process. She was arrested, jailed overnight, and then convicted without legal representation. It wasn’t until 2010, long after her passing, that this social justice warrior was pardoned and honoured. She is now the first Canadian Woman to be featured on Canadian currency. See her picture on a $10 bill!

Grade 10, 11 and 12 students, great news!  The deadline to apply to the Youth Academy has been extended to Thursday, February 29th at 4:00 pm.  The application is available through your counsellor or Career Advisor and is also posted on the SD38 Career Programs website.  Don’t miss this opportunity!

Grade 12 Students, did you apply to SFU Beedie School of Business?  Did you say yes?  A Representative from the program is visiting to offer you drop-in advice on Tuesday, February 6th at lunchtime (1:05-1:50 pm) in Room A105.  Looking forward to seeing you there!
