Remembrance Day is a time of reflection. On one hand, we celebrate the end of a World War; we, not as a city or country or even a continent, but as a global community united in a promise to strive for a better world. On the other hand, however, this phenomenal victory comes at a tragic cost. 41 million casualties was the price for liberty from strife, to end four years of suffering. It is important that we keep the memory of this tragedy alive; not only to honour the fallen, but also to ensure we do not endure the likes of it again in our history.
As well, 2017 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele, where Canadian soldiers overcame overwhelming odds to triumph in the siege. From a Social Studies 11 assignment to gain awareness of our country’s military contributions, I have created a video retelling the story of this event.
By sharing this, I hope that this may inspire others to take a deeper look at Canadian sacrifices, and how conflicts such as the Battle of Passchendaele have shaped whom we are today. For the First and Second World Wars have already caused too much death, may the burden of our knowledge ensure the safety of our future, lest we forget.
