MCMATH PEER TUTORING  (YIPS-2A)

Open to students in Grade 12

This course is a four (4) credit course and is intended for students who are in Grade 12 who enjoy supporting younger students with their subject classes. Peer Tutors complete tutor training/orientation sessions and assignments with the peer tutoring advisor/teacher, and then are placed in an appropriate subject class where they may work with individual and small student groups under the supervision of the subject/mentor teacher. Emphasis is placed on Peer Tutor's organization, communication, interpersonal skills and the ability to help students develop numeracy, reading and study strategies. To be a Peer Tutor you should have a strong academic record, consistent attendance and punctuality, an ability to work collaboratively with younger students, proficient management and organizational skills, and be a reliable and responsible student. If you are interested in this course, you must complete an application form to be considered for this course. You should have a subject area(s) of strength and two subject area teachers who would support your application.

Students interested in the McMath Peer Tutoring course must complete an application and be matched with a teacher sponsor.  Please try to have the Peer Tutor form completed and submitted by February 29, 2024.

• One Peer Tutor Block per Gr. 12 Student
• Excellent Management and Organizational Skills
• Excellent Record of Attendance
• Demonstrates Initiative
• Excellent Record of  Punctuality
• Positive Relationship with PT Teacher Sponsor
• Knowledge of Subject Area
• Able to Work with Limited Supervision
• Respect for Confidentiality
• Reliable, Responsible, Confident, Mature Student
• Works Extremely Well with Peers & Younger Students

Peer tutoring can benefit students by:

• Increasing individual attention in the classroom
• Influence of a positive role model
• Gains in self-esteem and self-confidence
• Improving study habits
• Improving grades

Peer tutoring can benefit teachers by:

• Allowing more individualized instruction in the classroom
• Helping with students who are struggling with course content, disabled learners, and/or students who missed classes
• Role model to younger students
• Increasing the positive attitude in the classroom

***Note: Peer Tutoring placement will occur at the end of the summer when all other courses have been sorted and we will then attempt to match your schedule with the sponsor teachers schedule.
