The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 2024 at McMath

For The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the entire school community was asked to participate in making our Hear Project.

From the beginning of Project of Heart the first act of reconciliation has been the decorating of small wooden tiles that have been installed in various commemoration exhibits across Canada. In the beginning the tiles were coloured black on the edges as memorials for children who died in Indian Residential Schools. Later in the evolution of Project of Heart some participants chose to colour the sides of the tiles with a colour other than black to honour survivors and their families. For our project, we created paper tiles that were placed together to create a mural for our school.

The English First Peoples 12, Français langue, and other classes read and posted the 94 Calls To Action in our hallways. Student were encouraged to reflect and connect with the recommendations and posted sticky notes showing their thinking.

As a wrap up our 94 Calls to Action installation, EFP12 students have looked up which calls to action have been completed, which are in progress and which have not started yet. The students have organized the 94 calls next to the heart installation in the rotunda - quite a visual, there is still a lot to be done as Canadians.
