Literacy with Grade 8s

An action that we have taken to support our school’s learning focus is:
  1. We conducted our second Grade 8 Proficiency-Based Assessment (PBA) in English.
  2. We conducted a Grade 8 PBA in French for our French Immersion Students
  3. We held an Executive Functioning Skills Workshop for all our Grade 8s, run by senior student volunteers. 

 

This action supports our school’s learning focus in the following ways:
  1. Our first PBA was completed in October.  This assessment was used as a follow up, to see what growth there was with respect to literacy in our grade 8 population in the following months. The data collected from the Grade 8 PBA will be used as a baseline for literacy. In particular, we analyzed growth for students who scored on the lower end for the first PBA.  Findings included:
  • Fewer Emerging levels overall
  • An increase in Developing levels
  • Double the number of Proficient levels
  • A slight increase in Extending levels
  1. Our French Immersion results are being analyzed for next steps
  2. Our senior students volunteered their time to run a workshop on organizational skills for our grade 8s. Included was how to keep an organized binder, organizing one’s time and agenda use.
