Literacy Scanning Results

What targeted actions did we take to address our school’s learning focus? We conducted our first Grade 8 Proficiency-Based Assessment (PBA) in English in October.   We also conducted a Student Survey and a Teacher Survey in October.
What gap or problem do these actions aim to address? Why was this particular strategy/action chosen?

On our October PBA, 98% of our students scored Proficient in Identifying and Using Text Features. The following skills were identified as needing improvement as >50% of our students were Developing or Emerging in the following:

  • Making Predictions
  • Identifying Main Ideas
  • Evaluating Reliability of a Text
  • Making Connections
  • Identifying Purpose with Evidence
  • Decoding Unfamiliar Words Using Word Skills
  • Making Inferences
  • Finding Evidence in Text
  • Responding to Text

Our Grade 8 Student Survey and Teacher Survey aligned quite nicely. Through surveys, students and teachers agreed that our Grade 8s have shown success in attendance, acclimatizing to a new school and meeting new people. Areas for growth include coming prepared for class, keeping track of homework, homework completion and submitting assignments on time.

How will we move forward accordingly?
  • Next steps will include working collaboratively with departments through our Educational Facilitators to develop literacy skills in all departments.
  • Our Grade 8 Team will also continue to develop plans to help students develop their executive functioning skills and improve their social-emotional learning.
  • We will scan our grade 8s again in the winter with a second PBA and school survey.
