Grad Nominations (Valedictorian, Historian and Poet)

In preparation for graduation, we have a few opportunities for students to participate in. If you are interested in applying for any of the following roles, please print out the application and hand it back to the office before May 3, 2023.  

 The class valedictorian is responsible for writing and delivering a formal speech honouring the graduating class. The primary purpose of this speech is to recognize and thank those individuals who have contributed to the success of this grad class, and to bid a final farewell to McMath. It often includes advice for the future as the graduates enter the next phase of their lives. This speech is serious in tone, thoughtful, and inspiring. The selected student should embody McMath PRIDE qualities and be a very strong academic student. Any Grade 12 student who meets these qualifications is eligible. The valedictorian will speak at the Valedictory Ceremony on June 14th, 2023. The chosen valedictorian will work with a sponsor staff member to develop the valedictory address.

If you are more interested in documenting your class's journey, then the position of class historian might be the perfect fit for you. The role of the class historian is to provide a reflective overview of the past years of schooling, with a particular focus on the past 5 years at McMath. The speech should include highlights and stories of memorable events that have been shared by the graduating class. This speech is intended to be positive, humorous and informal and should reflect on stories/events of the past years that can be shared by all members of the grad class. The selected student should embody McMath PRIDE qualities and be in good academic standing. Any Grade 12 student who meets these qualifications is eligible. The class historian will speak at the Grad Dinner & Dance on June 27 th , 2023, at the Fairmont Waterfront, Vancouver. The chosen historian will work with a sponsor teacher to develop the address.

 Lastly, if you have a way with words and a love for poetry, you might want to consider applying for the position of class poet. The class poet is responsible for reading a poem that provides his/her peers with a message appropriate for graduation. The class poet may choose to write the poem or select a poem written by another student. This student should embody McMath PRIDE qualities and maintain a strong academic standing. Any Grade 12 student who meets these qualifications is eligible. The class poet will present their poem at the Valedictory Ceremony on June 14, 2023. The chosen poet will work with a sponsor teacher to develop the address.

 Applying for these positions can be a competitive process, but it is also an excellent opportunity to showcase your skills and leave a lasting impression on your classmates. So, if you have what it takes to be the valedictorian, class historian, or class poet, don't hesitate to apply today!
