The Black Canadian we are celebrating today for Black Excellence week is Mary Bibb. Ms. Bibb was an activist, abolitionist, teacher, and editor of one of the first black newspapers in Canada. Mary founded the Mutual Improvement society, managed the refugee home society who distributed aid to those using the Underground Railroad to flee slavery, and started a school for children excluded from public school due to institutionalized racism. For her contributions to our country, Mary was recognized as a Person of National Historic Significance in Canada.
