What are our next steps?

We seek to support all students with literacy development and to establish a strong foundation for literacy skills among students in the junior grades (specific emphasis on grade 8 and 9 students) to prepare them for success in English language arts classes as part of the graduation program.

We looked closely at various forms of data to understand English/Humanities achievement levels of students in grades 8 & 9. We have looked at learning summary data, consulted with teachers in department meetings and staff meetings to understand what teachers are noticing. We noticed that data indicated a need for more focus on literacy outcomes for students in the junior grades.

We have and will continue to look at learning summary data, work with our ELL and English language arts teachers and literacy support teacher to develop assessment tools to track achievement trends of students in their literacy work. Student voice initiatives such as focus groups will also be important.

If we don’t notice improvement, we will reposition ourselves in the spiral and do additional scanning to see what else is happening for our students.

In the 2025-2026 school year we will implement additional measures designed to focus attention on the literacy skills of students (especially in grades 8 & 9). We are looking to develop new assessment tools that can be utilized. Our plan is to work with our literacy support staff member to develop a passion for reading program and look at the formation of a grade 8 team to help support this work. We would like to organize communities of learning, such as lunch and learns, to engage with teachers in additional ways to support literacy across curricula.
