Course Descriptions - Music
BAND 8 (MMU--08)
Concert Band 8 welcomes all students who play or wish to learn how to play a musical instrument. The objective of this course is to have students develop and improve playing skills on concert band instruments. Students will play in a variety of musical styles and perform concerts throughout the year. Regular home practice and attendance at rehearsals and concerts are considered part of this course.
BAND 9/10 (MMU--9/MMUCB10)
(Open to all grade 9 and 10 students)
Concert Band 9 and 10 welcomes all students who play or wish to learn how to play a musical instrument. Students will develop and improve playing skills on concert band instruments while studying music in a variety of styles. Playing skills as well as knowledge of music theory and history will be emphasized. Regular home practice and attendance at rehearsals and concerts are considered part of this course.
BAND 11/12 (MIMCB11/12)
This class will join with the Band 10 students to create a Senior Concert Band. A wide variety of repertoire will be introduced (symphonic music, rock, soul, blues, jazz, movie/TV themes) in order to enable students to reach their full potential as musicians! Attendance at concerts and rehearsals is considered a part of the course.
JAZZ BAND 9/10 (MJB--09/MMUJB10)
As well as traditional band instruments, we welcome piano, bass, electric guitar, and electric or acoustic bass into the Jazz Band! Students will interpret jazz repertoire and learn to improvise. Regular home practice and attendance at concerts and rehearsals are considered a part of the course.
JAZZ BAND 11/12 (MIMJB11/12)
This advanced Jazz Band course is designed to expand on the basic instrumental jazz concepts introduced in the Grade 9/10 Jazz Band course. More Jazz styles will be studied as well as a repertoire of Jazz standards. A greater depth of improvisation skills will be introduced along with various advanced Jazz techniques needed to perform this creative art. Attendance at concerts and rehearsals is considered a part of the course.
CHORAL MUSIC 8/9 (MMU--08/09---C)
No prior experience nor the ability to read music required. Students will learn the techniques for effective vocal production, as well as elements, principles, vocabulary, symbols, and theory of music. This class surveys and studies choral literature across a variety of styles and genres including classical choral works, folk songs, pop, jazz, and musical theatre. The use of music as a tool to express meaning, intent, and emotion will also be explored. Students will have the opportunity to perform both with in the school and in the community.
CHORAL MUSIC 10-12 (MMUCC10/11/12)
(Concert choir, off-timetable through RVS)
This course is open to any student who wishes to work in a singing ensemble in the school, and new members are welcome in grades 10 through 12. No prior experience nor the ability to read music required. Students will learn the techniques for effective vocal production, as well as elements, principles, vocabulary, symbols, and theory of music. This class surveys and studies choral literature across a variety of styles and genres including sacred and secular classical works, folk songs, pop, jazz, and musical theatre. Students will develop an understanding of how music is used as a tool to express meaning, intent, and emotion, and will also explore music that demonstrates personal voice, story, and values. Students will have the opportunity to perform both within the school and in the community.
CONTEMPORARY MUSIC 10-12 (MMUCM10/11/12)
This course is an opportunity for students to perform in both solo and ensemble contexts, combining diverse and various genres and styles to inspire innovation. We will learn to improvise and take creative risks in music, as well as adapt and refine our technical and expressive skills. Guitar, bass, percussion, drum kit, and keyboards will be available for performing and recording. This course in part replaces Guitar and Music & Production.
