Physical Health Education

PHYSICAL & HEALTH EDUCATION 8 (MPHE-8)

The goal of this course is to provide students with the knowledge, understanding, and skills to maintain physical health throughout their lives. We aim to have students appreciate the importance of physical well-being and its relationship to the intellectual, mental, and social health of all individuals. Students will actively participate in a variety of units including basketball, badminton, soccer, football, ultimate, weight training, dance, health & careers, minor games, softball, and track and field.  Students will experience multiple ways to understand and improve their fitness.  Students will be asked to complete three service hours in the semester in which they have PHE.

 

PHYSICAL & HEALTH EDUCATION 9 (MPHE-9)

The goal of this course is to provide students with the knowledge, understanding, and skills to maintain physical health throughout their lives. We aim to have students appreciate the importance of physical well-being and its relationship to the intellectual, mental, and social health of all individuals. Students will actively participate in a variety of units including lacrosse, pickleball, weight training, dance, health & careers, minor games, volleyball, rugby, ultimate, and softball.  Students will experience multiple ways to understand and improve their fitness.  Students will be asked to complete five service hours in the semester in which they have PHE.

 

PHYSICAL & HEALTH EDUCATION 10 (MPHED10 )

The goal of this course is to refine the knowledge, understanding, and skills necessary to maintain physical health throughout students’ lives.  We aim to have students appreciate the importance of physical well-being and its relationship to the intellectual, mental and social health of all individuals.  In grade 10, students will start to develop a repertoire of physical exercise and activity that they can continue into adulthood. Students will actively participate in units combining all of the activities covered in PE 8 and 9 and build on concepts learned in those grades.  Students will experience multiple ways to understand and improve their fitness.  Students will be asked to complete seven service hours in the semester in which they have PHE.

 

ACTIVE LIVING 11/12 (MACLV11 & MACLV12) 

Active Living 11/12 emphasizes the preparation for an active and healthy lifestyle after students leave school.  Students will participate and develop skills in a variety of physical activities that have the potential for lifelong involvement.  Lifetime sports and leisure activities are the major focus.  The program will consist of activities which use both school and community facilities.  The choice of activities will be made by individual classes from the following options:  badminton, basketball, ultimate frisbee, volleyball, aerobics, ice skating, minor games, tennis and racquet sports, weight training and many community-centered leisure activities.  Optional fieldtrips are estimated to be $40.

 

ACTIVE LIVING 11/12: COACHING & LEADERSHIP (MACLV11--L & MACLV12--L)

Through sport, conditioning, and weight training activities, learn and apply the concepts of exercise physiology, training principles, skill development and practice plans.  Become certified in NCCP (National Coaching Certification Program) Fundamental Movement Skills.  Help plan and carry out school events such as the Terry Fox Run, tournaments, and intramurals.  Students will be encouraged to assist with school or community coaching, refereeing, or scorekeeping.  Optional field trips are estimated to be $40.

 

ACTIVE LIVING 11/12: RACQUETS (MACLV11 & MACLV12)

This course is intended for students who have a passion for racquet sports (such as badminton, tennis, pickle ball, and table tennis) and want to participate in extensive hours of specific skill-development training in order to advance their game to the next level. However, it is also a program that welcomes all students who simply love to play these games and want to improve their overall skills and abilities.

 

These student-athletes gain knowledge in a variety of areas such as character building, time management, goal setting, stress management, sports nutrition, sports psychology , the ethics of sport, as well as a variety of other life skills. Students not only learn all the necessary developmental skills to play these games, but they also focus on the execution skills such as game sense, read and react, decision making, communication, and the importance of support.

 

FITNESS AND CONDITIONING: BASKETBALL 11/12 (MFTCD--11/12---B)

This is a performance course designed to support and encourage students to develop their individual sport skills, physical strength and conditioning, health and nutritional knowledge, goal setting and organizational skills with a basketball focus.  There is a classroom component in addition to the training component.  You will be introduced to topics such as basketball coaching theory, sports nutrition, exercise technique and training methods specific to basketball.  Students will also learn practical application of the care and prevention of common injuries and will assess and discuss common basketball issues through the use of video.  The course will isolate the important physical attributes for basketball and students will embark upon a conditioning program to improve these qualities.  As an aspect of enhancing their knowledge of basketball, students will complete coaching and refereeing training and will be expected to practice training as referees and coaches both in school and out.  

 

FITNESS & CONDITIONING: WEIGHT TRAINING 11/12 (MFTCD 11 & MFTCD 12)

This course focuses on improving students’ muscular strength and endurance while increasing their understanding of muscular anatomy and physiology.  Students will also be looking at areas of nutrition, weight programs, training equipment and technique safety.  The course also offers opportunities to learn and create a program to complement their sport.  Our goal is to develop students who can train safely and continue to weight train as a means to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

 

ENTRAÎNMENT ET CONDITIONNEMENT PHYSIQUE 11/12 (FTCDF11)

This course is designed for students who are more serious about improving their physical fitness through activities such as strength training or more intensive cardio. Fitness and Conditioning teaches students about the basics of anatomy, proper nutrition for training, and how to work out different parts of the body to train for various activities. Estimated cost of optional field trips/guest instructors is $40. This course meets the additional Grade 11 French language course requirement for a bilingual diploma. Students enrolled in this course MAY take a Social Studies course in English.

 

OUTDOOR EDUCATION  11/12 (MODED11---RVS & MODED12---RVS)

Do you like field trips?  Do you want to get outside more?  Do you have an interest or passion in outdoor activities and hope to expand your knowledge and experience in the great outdoors?  While the exact activities are dependent on participant interest (and the planning and budget of students) Outdoor Education 11/12 may include activities such as:  camping, hiking, snowshoeing, kayaking, canoeing, ziplining and rock climbing. You will learn about wilderness first aid, leadership skills, safety, nutrition, equipment, environmental conditions, sustainability and more about yourself and others. Please note that this course runs outside of the regular McMath schedule and is linear (September to June). Most months have one lunchtime meeting and one field trip. Estimated cost of field trips/guest instructors for the year is $165.
